Many Hindu activists and leaders, like those from groups such as the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), thought that Ayodhya was Lord Ram's birthplace. They wanted to build a temple there to honor him. To gather support for the temple, they often talked about the divine help of Lord Hanuman.
During the building of the Ram Mandir, people often saw a monkey around the area. They thought this monkey was like Lord Hanuman, supporting and approving the temple's construction. Many believed the monkey's presence was a spiritual sign, a positive indication that the temple project would be successful.
The story of the monkey is a key element in the stories and beliefs linked to the Ram Mandir movement. However, it's crucial to understand that these stories are more about religious beliefs than actual historical events. The movement was mainly characterized by legal conflicts, political issues, and ultimately, the tearing down of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, by a group of Hindu activists. The events following the demolition resulted in communal tensions and outbreaks of violence in different parts of the country.
In 2019, the Supreme Court gave the green light for building the Ram Mandir temple. Construction started in August 2020 after efforts to resolve the long-standing dispute through legal means. In the broader Ram Mandir movement, the monkey story remains an important part of the cultural and religious narrative.
Fortunately, Ram Mandhir was eventually constructed and inaugurated by Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modhi ji on January 22, 2024, in the Uttar Pradesh city of Ayodhya, where Ram was born.
